Other countries run their own versions, and many people simply pick a month that suits them — after a busy holiday season, before a big event, or when they want to see how they feel without alcohol.

What “sober curious” means

“Sober curious” describes people who question their drinking without necessarily giving it up for good. A month-long challenge is a natural experiment for them: try it, see what changes, decide what to keep.

How to choose your month

  • January has the most company and support, and comes after the heaviest drinking season for many people.
  • July or October are good if January is full of birthdays or events for you — and both come with fundraising if that motivates you.
  • Any month works. The best month is one without a wedding, a stag weekend or a holiday in the middle of it.

Make the month count

The challenges work best when you treat them as information, not just endurance. Track every day, notice what changes in sleep, mood and money, and decide before the month ends what you want the next one to look like. Our Dry January guide applies to any alcohol-free month.
