Standard drink calculator

Enter the size and strength of a drink to see how much alcohol it really contains — in grams, US standard drinks, UK units and other countries’ standard drinks.

14grams of alcohol
1US standard drinks (14 g)
1.8UK units (8 g)
1.4AU / IE / NZ drinks (10 g)
1Canadian drinks (13.45 g)

Grams = volume (ml) × ABV ÷ 100 × 0.789. UK units = volume (ml) × ABV ÷ 1000. Results are estimates; check the label for the exact strength.

How the calculator works

Every country’s guideline counts drinks as a fixed amount of pure alcohol, not as a glass. The calculator takes the volume and alcohol by volume (ABV) of your drink, converts it into grams of ethanol, then divides by each country’s standard: 14 g in the US, 8 g for a UK unit, 10 g in Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, and 13.45 g in Canada.
