Looking for an I Am Sober alternative? When a calendar works better than a counter

I Am Sober is excellent at one thing: counting days since you quit, with a community cheering you on. If that’s what you need, keep it. But if your goal looks different — fewer drinks, not zero, or a record that survives a bad day — a different kind of app may fit better.

What I Am Sober is great at

With a 4.9 rating from about 189,000 ratings on the US App Store, I Am Sober is one of the most loved sobriety apps on iPhone, and for good reason:

  • a clear sober-day counter with milestones and money saved,
  • a daily pledge in the morning and a review at night,
  • a large community of people quitting the same thing,
  • tracking for many habits, not just alcohol (extra trackers are part of Sober Plus),
  • Apple Watch, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro support.

The core is free. Sober Plus costs $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the US (with some 6- and 12-month options at other prices).

Why people look for an alternative

The same design that makes I Am Sober work for quitting can feel wrong for other goals:

  • You want to drink less, not stop. A counter of days since your sober date assumes zero is the goal. If you’re aiming for three drinks a week, there’s no number for “a good week”.
  • The restart after a slip. A sober date counter is built around one number. After a drink you set a new date, and a long run of days can feel like it’s gone, even if the app keeps your notes.
  • You want to see amounts, not just days. Two drinks and ten drinks are very different days. A day counter treats them the same.
  • You’d rather keep it private. Some people don’t want a community or an account. I Am Sober’s App Store privacy label lists data linked to you, including email address, user ID and device ID.
  • Price. $39.99 a year is fair for what it offers, but more than a simple tracker needs to cost.

Other alternatives worth a look

  • Try Dry — free, no ads, from the UK charity behind Dry January. A units calendar, dry streaks, wellbeing trackers and planned drinking. Requires an account; built around UK units. Good if you want depth for free.
  • Nomo — a long-running free sobriety clock app with multiple counters. Closest to I Am Sober’s counter style without the subscription.
  • Reframe — a paid program with daily lessons, for people who want a course rather than a tracker.
  • A paper calendar — still one of the best tools. Try our printable alcohol-free month calendar.

There’s a broader comparison in the best Dry January apps.

When to stay with I Am Sober

Stay if you’re quitting completely, if the community is part of what keeps you going, if you’re tracking more than alcohol, or if you use an Apple Watch every day. Those are real strengths, and DryPage doesn’t try to match them.

Switch, or use both, if you want an honest record of how much you drink, a month that doesn’t restart after one day, or a tracker with nothing to sign up for.

If you drink heavily every day, talk to a doctor before stopping suddenly. See our help page for support services.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an I Am Sober alternative without a subscription?

Yes. Nomo and Try Dry are free. DryPage is free to download and log, with a one-time $49.99 lifetime option if you want Premium without a subscription.

Is there a sobriety app that doesn’t reset?

DryPage keeps every day in a calendar, so a drinking day doesn’t erase your history or dry-day percentage. Only the streak of consecutive dry days restarts.

Can I use I Am Sober to cut back instead of quit?

It is designed around a sober date and days without the habit. For moderation goals, an app that logs the number of drinks per day, such as DryPage, Try Dry or Sunnyside, usually fits better.

Does DryPage have a community?

No. DryPage is a private log with no account. If peer support matters to you, I Am Sober or a group like r/stopdrinking on Reddit is a better fit.
